Atletico Madrid miss penalty awarded after the final whistle following VAR check, as LaLiga side and crash out of Champions League

Atletico Madrid exited the Champions League in dramatic fashion as they missed a penalty AFTER the full time whistle.

The LaLiga side were effectively knocked out of the competition not once, but twice, as they couldnt convert their golden opportunity awarded nine minutes into stoppage time to stay in the tournament.

Their Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen ended 2-2, which wasnt enough to save either sides place in the competition, with the visitors already being out after Portos win earlier in the day.

But then, in an extraordinary circumstance,Atleticowere given a lifeline as VAR sent the referee to the monitor for a possible handle in the box that had come after a corner in the 95th minute.

All this, AFTER the whistle had blown for full time.

Sure enough, referee Clement Turpin agreed the ball had been handled and awarded Atletico a penalty,

But despite a chance to stay in the competition being offered to them on a plate, Carrasco, who scored his sides opening goal, missed it.

Lukas Hradecky was the hero of the hour as he got down to his left to save the spot kick, as Atletico failed to score the rebound and crashed out of the Champions League.

The home side had gone behind twice against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday thanks to goals from Moussa Diaby and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Yannick Carrasco and Rodrigo De Paul pulled them level twice, but ultimately it wasnt enough to save their chances in Europes most prestigious competition.

Atletico ended the night on five points in Group B after sharing the spoils with the German side, too far off second placed Porto, their next opponents, on nine.

Now, the LaLiga side will have to battle for a spot in the Europa League against the Group B runners up next Tuesday, with Bayer Leverkusen one point behind them on four points.
